UNITED STATES— While chlorine is excellent at killing germs in public swimming pools, this summer pools will be filled with hand sanitizer instead of water in an abundance of caution. Leading pool scientists state this approach to pool safety seems like the most logical option. The viscous and gel like solution actually makes swimming easier. Pool patrons must note, you will not be able to move and float in the same way, so swimmers may need an initial adjustment period to get their sanitizer legs so to speak. Swimmers should however, be vigilant when entering and exiting the pool as hand sanitizer is very slippery. Use an abundance of caution when using ladders or stairs as you may slide right off. Goggles are mandatory as the high alcohol content can burn the eyes as well as any exposed wounds and paper cuts. Additionally eye washing stations similar to the ones used in high school chemistry classrooms will be installed in locker rooms as a safety precaution. Lifeguards will be briefed on sanitizer related injuries prior to Memorial Day. Pool patrons must also remember to shower off the sanitizer. While it will not turn hair green, it will really dry it out. It is up to the individual pool establishment to decide if the hand sanitizer has microbeads or not and which scent if any is chosen.
